Artist Statement
My work figurative work focuses on the human face, exploring and combining traditionally male and female features and anatomy. In doing so, my work invites the viewer to question the rigid gender binary. I have been exploring and transforming in terms of gender identity in my own life, and my work often reflects this. The work is typically painted on found wood in brilliant colors of acrylic and house paint. I often work simultaneously on 5 to 7 pieces at a time. When working on these I'll use all the paint that is on my palette on multiple pieces and I always use up all the paint on the palette. My art work is almost always done utilizing found materials as the surface. Wood is my favorite material to paint on and most of it comes from construction site waste and scrap. My favorite type of work is abstract, although I also do figurative and occasional landscapes that are usually reflective of the New Mexico mountain/desert area where I live. |
