This might sound silly, but about a month ago, someone had told me that I should draw something with zebras. For some unknown reason, they just had a strong feeling that I could create something amazing with a zebra.
So, last night (out of nowhere) the image of a zebra popped into my head and I started mentally playing with it and trying to come up with some fun "brain sketches". This is how the idea of an animal earth came to be. Because, that image of the zebra fit so perfectly over Africa (in my mind's eye) that I knew I just had to try it.
It took me an entire day (and some major research about what animals live where) but, I finally sketched out the image you see above.
This sketch in particular was an emotionally heavy piece. Might not seem that way, with the sweet animals and the beautiful imagery, but it was definitely a difficult one to get through. Within this little sketch is all my animal advocacy, my connection and compassion to the people and creatures around me, and a small sense of being lost in the vastness of it all. Now, I was never one to enjoy art critique or speculation, but something about this sketch effortlessly encompassed all of that and more without me really having to "think" about it. When I finished, it was like a sigh of relief to know that all of that feeling and emotion was down on paper and for the time being I didn't have to carry it around with me.
Despite being somewhat bittersweet to me, the image itself seems to be a positive one and that is definitely something I wanted to share.
I hope that all animal lovers can come to find their own meaning in it, because I really do think there are many layers to explore with this one.
